Hi all. I just wanted some opinions on what pre(s) to look at...
I want to buy one nice pre mainly for electic guitar and male rock vocals. I'd like to keep it around $1500, but cheaper is always better (duh). I'm going to be recording alt/rock/prog directly to a DAW using a MOTU running at 96k and 24bit. A little color would be nice I think...

I know this topic comes up a lot, but I've been shopping around for a good microphone and a mic preamp. My budget is around $2,000 for everything, maybe a little more if I can stretch it.

I just purchased an AEA R84DJV (voice-over version) ribbon mic and discovered that my preamps cannot develop enough gain. Part of the problem is that I do softly spoken word recordings (medical hypnosis applications) and the quiet source needs lots of clean, quiet gain.

I'm currently selling a lot of my gear and have around $2000 to $3000 to spend on a quality mic preamp or some type of DI to get me the sound I need.

sorry for doing this to you guys. i know there are tons of posts on pre's but i need something specific for me before i go to the u.s. tomorrow and buy something that will leave me unsatisfied and with no money. any help is greatly appreciated.

First off I am an electrical engineer, and I assume I have expert audio experience, so talk deep.

I have been looking into getting a preamp for a Korg DAW. Some of the preamps I have looked at include: Focusrite red 8 dual mic preamp, mh441 isa 428, or isa 430 mkII. Avalon makes a dual mono ad2022, which I might also be interested in.

Those of you with experience in recording chamber, orchestral and other types of live purely acoustic music, what type of preamp have you liked the most?

I'm thinking of building a stereo recording set up for only these purposes. (2 Mics, 2 Pre's, 2 analog tracks). I thought I'd start by asking about preamps first.
