Description

A preamplifier, also known as a preamp, is an electronic amplifier that converts a weak electrical signal into an output signal strong enough to be noise-tolerant and strong enough for further processing, or for sending to a power amplifier and a loudspeaker. Without this, the final signal would be noisy or distorted.

I don't get how preamps work with snakes

I'm mostly a recording guy, but I do the odd live sound gig. I've done a couple now with analog snakes that split the signals to both the FOH booth, and the monitor console. But I don't get how those work, in terms of preamps to microphones? Are there are two gain knobs controlling two preamps to one mic? How is that possible?

Tube preamps

Preamps are very "subjective" as we all know. Though I think it would be really helpful if people could perhaps post their top 5 choices for roughly about 1200 dollars. This is weed out some of the lower end units and focus on mid range units which I am sure many of us could use in our studios. I am looking to buy one myself, and this would be my first. I really could use some help.

More Preamps required for my Digi 002

I am looking at buying an ADAT preamp rack to connect to my Digi 002 as i now need more preamps as am constantly patching cables.
I need something that has 8 Mic/Line inputs and have looked at the PreSonus digimax D8 but it has 8 XLR inputs (On the rear) and only 2 line inputs on the front panel. I really need a unit that has 8 line and 8 XLR inputs.
