Mixing Backing Vocals

Forums

Hello Everyone,
I have been trying to find out how to make backing vox sound as if they were sorrounding me. I hear it in a lot of hip hop tracks and i would like to do the same to pop, r&b and gospel songs. My question is how can i make the backing vox seem as if the are coming literally out of the speakers and sitting in front of my face. Like as if the sound was in 3D.

How aggressive to be with compressing vocals during recording

Forums

Every recording/mix setup is probably a bit different. I've been advised by mixing engineers to be cautious with the compression while recording, because once it's done, it's done. But my experience has been that my Avalon 737 is more transparent than any compressor I can apply during the mix in Pro Tools.

Recording opera vocals in tiny home studio - mic & placement suggestions

Forums

I know, you're supposed to record opera singers in acoustically perfect concert halls, but I'm on a budget and all I have is my 8 x 10 home studio which doubles as both a control room and a live room. My goal is to record live vocals over pre-recorded orchestra karaoke tracks to famous soprano arias.

HELP on how to deal with nasally vocals

Forums

How do you deal with a nasal sounding speaker? Is there a certain frequency range that can be tweaked to fix it without damaging the timbre of the voice? I had a real problem with this on the weekend. The vocal was really nasally and hard to handle. I have an awesome chart listing fundamental frequencies and the frequency ranges for warmth, tin, mud, etc, but nothing for "nasally vocals".

help with warming up vocals in mix

Forums

look for help with warming up the vocals in my recordings. i am using a at2035 into the maudio mbox2 mini. Pro Tools 7.1 is my program. after do the normal eq, condenser, desser, and then busing the delays and reverb the voicals are just coming out to cold; hard; standing out in the mix to much. I'm looking for sugestions. how about a tube preamp added before the mbox.

Recording guitar, vocals, cello, violin LIVE with 2 mics?

Forums

I'm recording a songwriter with 1 large condenser; vocals and acoustic guitar. Also, I'm Micing a cello, and a violin with a RODE ntg-2 shotgun. I'm running both into a Zoom H4N recorder.

Here's a mock-up of how I intend to set up. Nix the back-up singers. Any ideas or tips?
Much appreciated!

mixing vocals

Forums

i was wondering how do engineers get that "in front of your face" sound on vocalists. i am currently mixing down a friend of mine that did a rap on one of my beats. i compressed his track a bit, then sent it to two aux tracks to one panned left and one panned right and slightly lowered the level. any other tips or advice you can give me please!
