Generally, one uses an oscillator to produce tones for setting levels in audio equipment. An example of a common test tone would be a 1KHz, +4dBu sine wave. Also oscillators are used, in part, for measuring a device's frequency response, distortion, noise, etc.

What does your current recording system consist of? Knowing this might help in showing how an oscillator can help you.

Hello, thanks for the response. It would be incorperated into a console. I will usually be recording to tape, so I guess it would be handy for test tones. How would you use one to check for distortion ? Thanks in advance :wink:
