Hi friends,
I will be soon recording a Horns Band, with 35/40 very young but good musicians on a budget project.
I have previuosly recorded nice small Camerata CDs and horns section inside my studio, but now it will be a complete different approach.
I have the following mics on here:
2 AT 4050
2 C3000B
2 C2000B
2 C418
1 SM91
2 BETA57
1 BETA58
1 SM58
I am planning to buy three additional mics among the ones below:
a) NT1
b) Nt2
c) AT4047
d) At4040
e) At3035
f)Beta57A
g) C3000B
I need help with the following doubts:
a)Which 3 mics should I but to complete my kit among those on the above list?
b)Which can be the best arrangement to record this project? spaced omnis, L/R over the conductor's head with spot mics so as to not lose focus? it will be around 17 different voices, maybe mic each voice so as to avoid bad acoustic influences of the place but having to deal with phase problems later?
Would like to thank you in advance!
Nice tuesday!

This is extremely cool.
Let me tell you Brothers, the sounds that come out of the studios' from S.America has always been good and that both of you take the time to come here and introduce yourselves.
Thank you so much and keep it up.
Before Napster went down, I was discovering Latin music and buying all I can. I loved all the sounds. I lived in a community in NW Arkansas where their were many Indians, Mexicans, Hispanics and Latino's. I would meet them at the local watering hole and on napkins write down some of the groups to download to see what I liked. The recordings sounded really good and I bought stacks of CD's because I could finally hear the music..due to napster and friends that would turn me on. Keep up the good work fellows, No-one is getting airplay in the USA unless you sound like shit,(Britney pop, Disney stuff..or popular nastiness) so go ahead and make those great recordings. Remember, we can buy them on the web!!!!!

Hi Bill! Thanks for your nice words! In fact you are already a big friend of mine!
Trash music is already present on every radio..
I have just finished a pop rock band. The guys are young, not great musicians but have some nice musical ideas that I tried to polish..
However, they presented the CD I did and now the major company wants to transform them into a very big thing...
I know that talent is somewhat subjective. Like you mentioned there are lots of artists that hardly can sing without autotune or a playback of his in a live show.
The phenomena of the project/basement studio is something that added democracy to the musi scene all around the world.
I imagine that the top studios like Ocean way, Chung King, Hit factory and a hundred of others shall not enjoy very mucg small to medium studios with 02Rs, d8bs and PT Hd/mix systems.
The same goes from us ,small to medium, compared to micro/small studios.
The thing is getting wild. I have seen many situations that a guy with a DIGI 001, a C3000B, and some few hours on the web researching the coolest DAW tips also with some cracked plugins introduce himself as a recording enginner/music producer.
There are some with good albus done in Brazil, but mostly are shit music. There are terrible musical styles here like PAGODE, AXÉ MUSIC, SERTANEJO, MBEAT ( they insist on calling that Funk) that have domained the scene for a good time.
However, things became very bad for the majors that were putting out these musical styles . The biggest portion of the masses now prefer to buy a $2 pirate CD instead of buying the original one, aroun $10.
I would not mind paying $15 for a new TOTO, Tears for Fears album or a LENINE, DJAVAN ( great brzilian artists) .
Seems majors will have to rethink their releases and prices...
wanna see your comments on this!
Nice week!

Hi Alécio: You are right about the topics you made mention.
Hi Alécio:
You are right about the topics you made mention. But I make an observation: in the "sertanejo" style, we can see good arrangements and quality recordings. I also not love much this musical style, but this not get out the merits of any productions.
About the CD price, the major companies are paying for the fault of commercial vision. They talk about the hight money put in their productions, but we know the hight CDs quantity wich are pressed turn the unitary investment at a ridiculous level. So, the price is over estimed and the decline of the CD's number selled is a consequence.
By other side, the production in small studios have one component to be analised: the fault of preparation of the musicians. They compose 12 songs, without arrangements (only the melody and a basic acoustic guitar accompainment), go to the studio and believe the technolgy can to make all.
I'm mixing a project of 12 songs of one group (from São João Batista, you know). The guys came to the studio in that situation (they hadn't drummer nor keyboard player and I was forced (in terms, of course) to program the drums and play the keyboards. And more: they pretend to make the show of the CD at December 10 and to this they will make only one session with the drummer and keyboardist wich at this date they not contract ....
I know this isn't a rule, but this exception is around of the studio each wice with more frequency.
For me, is time to make more money as a producer/arranger ...
Nice week for you, friend.

Hi Juca! In fact I had produced some SERTANEJO stuff an one of them has gained lots of airplay very recently. If you tune to BAND FM you will listen to Mayk & Rey. it is a mixof country ( most sertanejs in Brazil want to sound like north american pop/country nowadays). I tried to apply a pop rock to their stuff, in fact the latest 2 songs. Something more like an air supply with some nice leads a la Satriani/Lukather.
Fortunately, rock is comingback to our scene. Just see the big success of pop rock from Frejat, Lenine and Capital Inicial.
If you need some good mastering tasks, feel free to contact me bud!
Nice wednesday!
