hi people !

Can anyone tell me what multi fx is good for metal music and is under 200$ ?

I am thinking of the Korg ax 1500 or the zoom gfx 5. Which is better or what alternatives are there ?

to me distortion is important, some real nice fat sound for metal.
and wah is also a thing. i know most multi fx kinda suck on wah, so I don't expect too much, but what multi fx wah is good ?

thanx for any help.
Alex

first off, zoom sucks. definatly don't get that. what kinda amp are you runnin? if you like ur amps distortion, i'd stick with that. multi-effects units really don't have good sounds period. never tried the korg, but im sure its better than the zoom. honestly, if your just going to be using wah and distortion, i'd just get the seperate pedals. that way they will sound better and its really more versatile. if you have a tube amp (which i doubt you do if you want a digital modeller), get an overdrive to push the tubes into high gain. if you have a ss amp, whatever you do, don't get a pedal that says metal on it. i have the boss OD-20, which is like $180. has lots of different distortions and overdrives, so your bound to find a sound you like on it. i'd suggest getting that, but it might be outta your price range if you also want a wah. for wah, get a crybaby ($70). its a classic and sounds great.

For a monosynth. Nothing multi, just distortion.

yea, the OD-20 has the boss od-2 and od-2 in it. it is very flexible and u get tons of distortion sounds.

good bad or indifferent?
I dont really want a digital device to plug my analog monosynth into.

i don't really like stuff that has the word modeler in it. i wouldn't really consider the boss od-20 to be a modeler. in a way it is, but it feels and sounds more analog and not digital. plus its built like all other boss pedals, like a tank.

if i were you, i'd go to guitar center and take ur monosynth and try different pedals out. try a boss overdrive, try the ds-1, try the od-20, try the line 6 distortion thing, try an mxr dist.+, try some digitech, maybe even try some fuzzes. try everything they have there and see what you like the best.

Nirvalica - thanx for all the nice comments.
However, there's no chance for me to test any pedal.
I read the 39 reviews of the Zoom GFX 5 on harmony central and they seemed to be saying the same thing : it's an ok pedal ment for metal ..
that's what I want. I don't want only distortion, but also wah (although it is rather week on most multi-fx) and the whole rest of stuff...
I dunno yet, still need to save some money. The korg seems a lil weaker for metal distortion from what I've read and their sound examples on the net.
The boss multi distortion thingy :) , the od-20 has too many things. If I were to get a simple pedal it would be the MT-2. EQ + metal disto is all I could care for :)

gotta warn you though man, the boss metal zone (MT-2) doesn't sound very good. i have played a zoom pedal, i think it was the 502 or somethin like that, and didn't like it at all. too digital. never played the korg, but i owned a pandora by korg. i like that a little better, but it was still really digital. i ended up trading it in when i bought a new fender strat. seriously, go to the guitar world forums. im a member there and they have some really knowledgable people there that can help u out. just sign up and post a question in the gear, gear, gear forum.

Why not just forget the multi function stuff, really. Even if you could afford one of the most expensive all in one units like the new TC, you would be dissapointed. Thats what most veterans realize, that apart from the convenience, the all in one units have maybe just one useable sound for them. So afterwards, that cheap $200.00 all-in-one pedal is really just a $200.00 one trick pony (or $2000.00 if you bought the TC).

Not so cheap anymore eh?

Do yourself a favor and learn your taste in pedals, what you like, and what you don't like. Learn how to series them, bypass them, loop them ect. Build your tone chains and preferences to your individual reflexes, ears, touch, guitar, amp ect ect. This is how to do it like the big boys.

My advice, is to do this with inexpensive analog Danelectro pedals. Notice I didn't use the word cheap here, because some of the Dano's are direct knockoffs of some classic analog circuits.

You can get a lot of Danelectro pedals( a sackful)) for $200.00 bucks, and even for less if you buy them used. You'll probably find your tone with fewer pedals than you might have thought. Go with the basics first ,one or two at a time. Or buy a truckload of them and return the ones you don't like. Most stores have a liberal return policy.

With a multi-effect like the Zoom, you may never get the education or the tone. Just overprocessed and without identity.

P.S,, if I were only allowed two pedals on a desert island, one of them would be a Peterson Strobostomp.

:D Have fun.

the deal is that I'm not a pro.. I don't even play in a band yet coz I don't have the time for this ..
I think that a multifx suits my playin coz I like both the metal sound and the classic rock stuff. I heard some damn neat sound examples on the Zoom and it also has some nice emulations to it too.
Danelectro pedals could be an alternative, but there's no use if the things cost like 19$ and I have to buy batteries all the time.
For now I think a multifx has all I need, plus it runs with the included adaptor. The zoom also emultates analog rather that digital, from what I've read.
I think that for a beginner pedal it has some nice sounds to it.
I actually started the thread to get somebody that has it to tell me more about it.....
I don't yet really know what I'll do, but I'll save some more cash and see then :)

man, it emulates analog, but it still is digital. emulate means to copy, so the models are based off of analog stuff. thats all it means.

also, don't think im terms of beginner gear and pro gear. anything can be good for anyone. just because you can't play as good as someone who's been playing for 10 years doesn't mean you can't have the same gear as them. it all comes down to what will work and sound best for you, and im sure the zoom isn't going to fullfill the sound part. if anything, atleast look at digitech stuff. maybe the boss me-50.

Steven Colbert here...with the truth and nothing more.
First off, yes...auto wah's do suck. Stay away from them. Get a Morley, there great for metal.
Also try a Line6 POD, they are cheap, and have a nice sound for heavy music. They are not the best option, but you are looking for something cheap. And they have plenty of guitar effects like delay, chorus, ect, ect.
