hey guys... workin on this project for a scremo band, of course the last song i mix i'm getting clicks and pops, I'm thinking its my second harddrive, when i put my mixes onto it it seems to have the same problem. however these were originally recorded on my first harddrive. but stored on the second and broght back(made sure all my files were coming from the first harddrive) anyhow, i realise that not all u guys are recording on an old powermac g3... but i hope one of u guys can help me out.

clicks and pops? that's simple.

The location guys who were working on the film shoot must not have had a SMPTE master clock running, so instead they used the "old fashioned" synch method of "clicks and pops" (usually called "two pops"). Your stem editor didn't cut these out, so you just have to do it. One pop is at lead in, the 2nd is at LFOP.

Don't cut them until you verify they line up with the visual though. No telling what the guy before you might have been drinking so you don't want to take anything for granted.

First of all thanks everyone for replying...
its actully recorded onto the soundfiles
you cannot see them and they are not consistent
ex. at the beginning of the song the clicks come on different tracks at different point and are totally random.
Also I am almost certain it isnt a timing issue because i checked the chain several times and everything makes since.

I'm using digital performer 3
sound card is the motu for the 2408
mac os9
350 mhz
i think the hds are 2800's
and i think 256 of ram

i know that this is all slow and old but it has worked excellent and i ushally dont have problems with it. But im just wonderin if i'm forgetting something simple. thanks alot guys!
I will try to mess with the buffer and see how that works and get back to you, until then please keep em commin!

You are still slightly confused.

You are correct in that it is recorded with the problem. You may not necessarily see it in the waveform display while you are recording. They may be visible upon playback, if you zoom into the waveform, when you are hearing them. That's all there is to it.

I own the same piece of hardware the MOTU 2408 mk II, but I'm using it on a PC. In the hardwares settings (selected within the 2408 configuration utilities), there is something referred to as "buffers". This is adjustable and this is the problem! You have to adjust the buffers, either higher or lower. There is no "right" settings! You just have to experiment with higher or lower settings until the problem stops. You can verify this by contacting MOTU.com .

You may also be trying to record more tracks than your computer can accommodate due to speed and RAM. As far as I know, most Mac G4s & G3s can record 8 tracks simultaneously. Playing back you may be restricted to a finite number of tracks, depending on your computer's capabilities. You have created a masterpiece, with judicious amounts of overdubbing and 64 channels of sound. It AIN'T gunna' play! You average computers, be it Macintosh or PC, generally is not going to play back much more than 16 to 32 tracks at one time. If you need more tracks, you may have the composite some of them.

I used to hare the same problem. I was using a G3 with Cubase VST and a M-Audio Delta sound card.
After much upgrade (Software to SX and Sound card to RME) I tossed the Mac and built a PC based on an AMD Athlon 3000 with 1 gig ram. My recording drive is a 7200 – and all of my problems went away.

In a nutshell, the problems are performance related. Don’t use too many plug-ins, especially verbs and don’t open too many virtual instruments.

I'm using a 2408 mk2 as well...originally on a G3 350 and now on a dual G4. Clicks and pops are usually a wordclock issue with the 2408. I've had the same problem in the past. As RemyRAD stated it could also be your buffer setting. With my system it turned out to be a clock issue. Sometimes the pops were recorded into the files, sometimes not. If the pops are in your files they will definitely show up in the waveform view. If they are not in the waveform and just show up at random times then it's probably your buffer or wordclock settings.

hey guys thanks all for replying
the deal seemed to be that when i transferred the files to and from, there was missing samples i think, there were tiny breaks in the wave and the program replaced it with a triagle waveform.
i tried the buffer size and all that jazz, made sure everything was working correctly. So whoever said it was a clip in the wave they were right and to all the other suggestions only make me more aware of things so thanks

also..i didnt really go in and redraw the waveform, but i had to go thru like 50 cds which i burnt to. Funny how when people say backup everything twice and most people think once is good enough. glad i listened!
Thanks guys!

also i am workin on gettin a new mac so im not gonna spend any more money on this one.and the ram is specific to mac , i am good friends with a guy who's been workin on em for 20+ years so he keeps it goin
