i want to build a home studio for recording to my self guitars, vocals and midi.
i have 4 choices of monitors:
tannoy reveal active
Behringer 2031A truth

i thought about the Tannoy.
But what do you think will be the best for me? maybe other from above? that will have a good sound without too much color.

hi,
From my (limited) experience in monitors I would limit that list down to two: Behringer Truth, or Tannoy (I've heard good things, never actually heard one.)
From there though I would be in a bit of a pickle. I recomend doing a bit of (extended) research and then pick one out of a hat or something, they can't be that different?

I've probably made it confusing like I always do but yes.

Get a CD that has a song on it you would like to sound like.

Find a shop that has the monitors you are thinking about and set up for auditioning (any decent shop does this).

Pop in the CD at the shop and listen to it through the different monitors (for nearfields - with your ears level with the monitor's tweeters and equidistant from them forming an equilateral triangle).

Pick the ones that sound best to you.

Monitor selection is very subjective because we all perceive sound differently. If you pick the ones that sound best to you, those are probably the ones you would not mind spending hours on end mixing in front of.

when I was in the same boat lookin for some nearfield powered monitors, I narrowed down to M-Audio BX8's or Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2As....though many from your list were considerations as well early on, in the end, I went with the Wharfedales.

having said that ,personal opinions are just that; opinions. In the end, roguescout definitely has it right.... listen to some familiar tunes on a buncha monitors and try to get a sense of which ones sound true to you.

best of luck

I just got the KRK rp5's after owning the M-audio's and although I've only had them for two days I like them much better. I listened to lots of monitors in the store (although the msp5's weren't set up) and other than the Dynaudio's, which were amazing, the rp5's really sounded great next to all of the more expensive monitors, which was not the case for any of the other budget ones I heard, imho. If I had the cash I might have gone with the V6's or the Dyn's, but I feel like I got a great value in the Rp5's.

At home I am still just listening to them and evaluating, so....

Good Luck!
