yo all.i am new here and i am coming with a problem.
i downloaded a lot of akapellas and i noticed that ALL vocals are distorted in the hifieldfreq.i said i need a tube preamp since i have a Neumann u87ai and AKG solidtube i said that the preamp is actually bad.i bought SPL GAINSTATION 1 a solidstate and tube preamp..the Neumann sounds a lot better in this but again..too clean.
my ideea is that i am thinking that the effect is not from any tube stage .i think it is a procession after effect.maybe some exciters hardware but i can`t figure out which one.i ask you i tried a lot of sofwre plugs.all distorsion is very digital.on the akapellaz like 50 cent beyonce jauz and others there iz a distorsion like analogone i don`t know how to explain u have to listen.none of the plugins that i tryed can't match that sound.maybe you can help me and tell me what i really need to buy .software or hardware.please download from emule mariah carey feat busta rhymes - i know that u want akapella since that track have the strongest effect so you can listen what i am talking about.thank you.
i wonder why nobody is talking about those effects.only compression and eq bla bla...very basic plugins..

I was joking about the pop filter thing.
A lot of big hip hop vox are done with an Avalon pre and a Sony C800.
Eminem for example. **EDITED** Actually, Eminem's vox were recorded with a C800 and a Neve 1073. But you get what I mean.
The pop filter thing came from a rapper calling and asking if I had Stedman mics...of course...Stedamn makes pop filters.

Those are some bad-ass pop filters, though.
If there is a Rolls-Royce of pop filters, Stedman should get the nod.

I'm not all that impressed with the Steadman pop filters, they are overpriced and I can pick them up at four times their size at my local supermarket chain grocery store for four dollars each! I found out about these frying pan splatter screens about 10 years ago. It's not a screen like the kind that keeps the bugs out, it is a piece of punched aluminum that creates something akin to Venetian blind louvers. It diffuses the air from striking the capsule directly while being more transparent than nylon stockings. You can make 4 pop filters from each splatter screen. Of course you have to provide the frame (embroidery loop, etc.) and a flexible gooseneck Mount. After spending that much time goofing around, it's cheaper to purchase the Steadman but they use the same thing!
Can you imagine what the people at the grocery store thinks about Stedman coming in every couple of days for more frying pan splatter screens??

Yes, they do, but its also a result of the status of recording on the most expensive equipment found.
Just as I saw a "famous" rapper today driving a Bentley Continental GT
with the biggest spinners I have ever seen, I swear they were 26"

with regards to heavy compression be careful, in my experience compressors are one of the most demanding pieces of equipment in the studio enviroment. by this i mean you really do need to understand whats goin on with a compressor if you dont want the end result to hamper the vocal take, nothing worse than getting an amazing performance destroyed by over compression, easily done. distortion can be added easily via plugins of which there are many worthy of mention, cheap too. not wanting to sound like the audio fairy but your ears are the best tool at all times. we have been blessed with numerous tools both hardware and plugin with which to record/sculpt our audio enviroment to our liking.
