Hello all,

Just wondering how the JTL stacks up to other stands, namely AEA and Shure, in terms of stability/rigidity? Any experiences welcome.

My Black Tower arrived, and it is stupendous. It is also the most pound-per-dollar I have experienced lately! (about 40lbs!)

It goes WAY up, and I would not hesitate to put a Manfrotto extension on top it either. It is at least as solid as the old BIG AKG stands/booms that they were marketing in the mic-70s. I would not hesitate to put a pair of TLM170s (the heaviest mics I own) up on the very top. A sandbag would be superfluous.

The only downside is that it uses rotating collars to tighten the sections. The collars are knurled, but the only thing keeping the section from slipping down is how tight the collar is. Really tightening these things is tough on the hands. My Lowelite gaffer gloves will be permanently attached to this stand!

For 75% of my work a 12ft Mafrotto with extension is fine at a fraction of the weight. But when I need to get WAY up, this big boy is the ticket.

Well worth the $160 (with shipping).
