i heard there is some way of cancelling out all spill from studio monitors when tracking if they are in the right position and some phase reversal trick thingy is used. can anybody elaborate for the sake of me not using headphones in the studio?

I have gotten much greater results with method #2, I guess that room acoustics and reflections also matters and that rules out the first method for me.
Recording with speakers is a godsend for some artists, especially vocalists and brass/woodwind players. At some occasions I have had a small PA set up in the studio esp for this purpose, we also did a "live" recording with a synth band recently - they sounded way too stiff when recorded in the "supposed" fashion, but now they where really rockin'.
FWIW: Rumour has it that ABBA often recorded vocals in the c-room without headphones.

Jon, how would we go about lining that up? My travels have taken me through Asia and the USA but still haven't made it to Europe, despite it being the highest on my priority list :) If it's warm weather you're after, perhaps you might consider Sydney. We haven't had any summer here yet... :(

That's amazing! At about 37 degrees latitude, that's the southern equivalent of Spain, Sicily, or Virginia not having had summer yet by the end of July! Do you have some kind of frigid ocean current running off Tasmania that keeps your weather cold?

Do an experiment without even singing and see how much cue track can be removed when you mix the out of phase back in.
Kind of works best with near field so the room verbs don't get in the way. Put an auritone or NS10 on a stand in front of the singer.
I don't explain these thing well when I can't wave my arms. :w:
