I've been recording and mixing my band's album for a while now, in between booked studio time, and i'm almost finished, but I'd like to hear your opinions on the mix, here's a sample...

First of all - I really like the kind of music you're doing here. Sounds fresh.
Overall , the balance of everything and the sounds come across quite good on my monitors.

The two things that jumped out at me right away:

1) The mix is VERY loud. This song just begs for dynamics and it seems to hit 100% volume from the get-go and never let up. This is a great song, and I would have like to have heard the loudness maximizer backed off a bit.

2) About 25% of the way through the song, I was hearing the vocals doing the auto-tune stair-case. Maybe I'm just hearing things, but it came across fairly pronounced to me.

More dynamics and this song would just rock for me. Great job.

I'm totally aware of the dynamics issue, but really if I don't master the song this loud, the people in radio stations don't like it and won't play it
:? it sucks no one understands dynamics. This is a premaster, I sort of noticed the drums a bit lost sometimes, the toms mostly and the kick drum a bit, just a bit that's something I have to work on before we release the album, I'd love your opinions on the guitar's sound though :D

I liked the guitar sound. It sat well in the mix and sounded balanced.

As far as loud - there is loud and then there is a point where there is so much average power everything sounds flat and monotonous and takes the true energy of the song away. I don't think it needs to be a quiet mix by any means, but could stand to be backed off a bit is all to let things breath a bit.

Anyway, you wanted opinions. That's my opinion.

Just do 2 masters. One that sounds good, and works for the song. (no 2-bus compression. Straight to mastering engineer) and another one for radio stations. (prefferable have the mastering engineer maximize it. They usually have better gear to make stuff loud)
