HOLY CRAP! Did I just say that out loud? LOL

Anyway, I've got a friend who will be building his DAW, sometime around March. He posted a rundown of what he's looking at on another forum I frequent. Here goes.

Looking like the system is gonna cost me aroun $3k.

Lite On 52X Burner (Upgrade for current machine, 32X will go in the new one)

2x 80 gig ATA133 @ 7200Rpm

2x 512 MB DDR333 PC2700 Ram

NEC 18.1" LCD Monitor(for current system, new one will get a 15" LCD with the tax return)

ASUS P4PE/R/L/SATA Motherboard

P4 @ 2.53GHz Northwood 512K 533MHz Bus

ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (again, another upgrade for the current machine, the new one will have my Radeon 64MDDR in it.)

$1555.95 shipped from newegg.com

This is what I'm gonna get when I get home, unless something better comes out for the price.

Let's not forget the Aardvark Q10, and a rackmount chassis. That's about another $1000

He'll be on the lookout for anything better that'll come out between now and then. Is there anything you've heard through the grapevine or is there any changes you'd recommend. I've already told him he should think seriously about the WD 120g for audio. What was the issue with the WD 80g drives? Something besides the extra 40gigs that made the 120s better. I couldn't remember. So, I told him I'd ask and reply. Anything offered, in order to get this rig hummin', I'm sure he'd appreciate.

Thanks in advance, Opus(or anyone else that has $.02).

Well...word on the street is to wait for the Canterwood chipset which will have support for of an FSB that is 800Mhz!! Now that is something to write home about!! lol
Now, as far as Granite Bay goes, which is out but the mainboards are all backordered and hard to get, it's nice but there is no overclocking ability on it and you can only run PC2100 at the present moment. It will offer great performance in the long run with the dual channel DDR since it will truly be synchronous to the CPU.
Otherwise the best thing to do is stick with the Asus P4PE with the 845PE chipset and use the DDR 333...personally you don't need more than 512MB of ram...any more and it's really not going to make a huge difference...for dual processors...yes. So...if you were to get the Asus P4PE and a 3.06Ghz CPU with Hyper Threading than I would get 1GB of DDR 333 and that would be one hell of a machine...
I'm truly happy with the my Asus P4PE and the 2.66Ghz CPU...I will be eventually getting a 28Ghz CPU with the HT enabled when they come out..or when and if this new possibility comes through for me(can't say bubkus about that one so don't even think about asking :D

I hope this dude we're talking about decides to join us here at RO. He's cool and a really talented guitarist who, it turns out, my brother and I inspired back in high school. I had no idea, until years later, when he told me a story about listening to us play on the school steps. Music is such a cool drug to get someone hooked on(even if it is inadvertently). I have three little Blutones I plan to pass it on to. LOL, it won't be hard. All three have a great love for music. Even my 9 month old will hear music and find it irresistable not to sway back and forth, lol. Hopefully, one of the will develope an affinity for low frequencies. LOL, good bass players are so hard to find.

Oh...lol...Sorry to highjack my own thread. I felt like sharing. :s:

Someone should start an inspiration thread...or did I just do that? lol

The Maxtor Diamond 9 8MB cache series is prolly what he'll be going with. Hmmm...might be what I go with soon. :D I think the free shipping will influence him on this one. When he gets back from Uzbekistan(spelling?), he'll be stationed in Georgia. I can't wait 'til he throws this together. Tennessee ain't that far away. I'll make the drive down just to take a gander.

BTW, I think he's gonna shove all this into a rackmount. Thoughts?

I'm here Blu, been lurking here for about a week or so.

I didn't post any questions cause most of the questions that I had, I found answers to by reading here or elsewhere.

And yes, I was partially inspired by you and your bro, setting on the steps jamming. Never really talked to you guys, cause I was a youngster, and that just wasn't cool...to be seen hangin out with a 4th grader. ;)

The rack case it's gonna go in is just for my own neat-freak kinda personality. I'm prolly gonna get the Aardvark Q10, and I'd like to keep everything neat. It should go nice with the Alesis compressor that my roomate picked up at a pawn shop for me.

And, like Blu said, I'm currently in Uzbekistan, working for the good old U.S. Air Force. Won't be home till March, and don't wanna order anything for it till I get home.

Cheers!
