Hey guys,
I'm new to recording, and I have what I think is a simple question. Right now I have an m-audio mobilepre usb for my laptop, and I use Sony Acid recording studio. I tried to record my acoustic guitar just by Micing it (Shure sm57). The problem is that when I play it back, it's very low and hard to hear through my headphones. Am I missing some equipment that I need or something? I know I need a mixer, which I will be getting next week...but will that help bring up the vulume when I mic my acoustic? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well the m-audio mobilepre usb is a preamp and interface in one. I realize it's cheap and I'm not going to get the best quality from it, but it's all I can afford right now.
So the setup is: sm57, cord, preamp, computer. I recorded my electric guitar, and I could hear it better. Wasn't real loud, but loud enough. My preamp has balanced XLR inputs, but I can't use them until I get the right cable. Would using the XLR input help?

Is your chain of gear 57, cord, laptop? If so the problem is you need a preamp. The comps line or mic inputs are not designed for the level of current the 57 is putting out. Remember that listening to your tracks before you "master" them will be significantly softer than any cd you could buy.
So a little more info on your experiance and gear would help so we can know what you have and what you know.
