I am planning on buying a Mac laptop to run Pro Tools on. I know that I need an extra drive which I will add via firewire. Which Mac will work the best? I am thinking I should get it with a recordable DVD and CD drive. I will interface the computer via an MBox. I have always used PC but I think it might be wise to switch over to the Mac system to run Pro Tools.

The Powerbook G4 Titanium (1Ghz) 15 inch model would do well for this and has a good price....it's one downfall being that it still uses PC-133 SODIMM RAM. This is slow RAM. The 17 inch G4 Powerbook (1Ghz) uses faster PC2700 DDR SODIMM RAM and would be able to handle higher track counts andplug-ins It also has Firewire 800 and you would then be able to use those faster FW800 external harddrives that are coming to market. But the 17" costs a bit more. And as Uncle Bob sez, squeeze all the RAM you can into it (max is 1GB).

RTAS is Real Time Audio Suite which is native real time effects processing. Since you will not be using a TDM card all the real time processing of effects, soft synths, etc. takes place in your Mac.
TDM PT systems use separate PCI based processing cards to handle the real time processing of effects, dynamic processing, etc. Very fast, very powerful, very expensive, very nice!
