Hello, I`m a norwegian neewbie, and I currently rely on a emu 404 soundcard.
But I`m considering upgrading to a firewire multitrack.
The two candidates so far is PreSonus firepod and Edirol fa101.
Now I know that the firepod is a better card but, I would be very happy to get a cheap solution, hence the edirol being half the price.
One more for the road, is it possible to connect a( lets say a sure sm58) to the balanced line inputs and get sound.
Or do every connection have to be a XLR with preamp and phantom power?

Nop. Most mics output a mic level signal that is a few millivolts, line level signals are a few volts. So you need an amplifier. The stand-alone solution is a separate microphone preamplifier, or for short micpre. These range in price from low up to extremely expensive. On the very low price level you might find brands such as Behringer or Alto.
One alternative that some people use is a small mixer. From these you get a lot of functionality for a low price. Quality-wise it is not totally it of course depends on a lot of things.
