Does anyone know if Windows 7 works with Pro Tools M-Powered?
I am not sure if I should upgrade to Windows 7 or go back to XP. Because at the moment I am on Windows Vista Home Premium.
I also heard that Windows XP was going to stop or something on July 13th 2010.
What should I do?

Windows 7 will run PT M. If you need 64 bit drivers then you need to use the special installer from the Digi website.

Officially Qualified with Pro Tools LE & M-Powered Version 7.4 & 8.0/8.0.1

* Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition
o 32-bit OS Installation Only
* Not Supported:
o Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)

What this means is that while Win7 is not published as qualified yet, the two versions that eventually will be officially supported is Win7 Pro and Win7 Ultimate.

Home Premium anything should be dumped.

You might as well migrate to Win 7. XP though much loved is reaching the end of its life and newer applications will soon fail to support it. The speed bump that is Vista (though personally it worked for me) will soon be a memory as well. To be sure, just like when any new OS comes out, the configuration guides will get better and better too. There are already several out there for Win7.

If you are having serious doubt and gnashing of teeth, then partition your hard drive into two and dual boot XP and Win7. Motherboard/PCIe/peripheral component compatibility is more important any day than the operating system.

Officially, PT does not yet support Win7. Unofficially I'd say Win7 Pro or Win7 Ult will work. Caveat: I am not a Digi developer not do I particularly care for PT.

There also isn't much need to rush in to the decision. July is a ways out yet. Browse and research the Digi forums for Win7 experiences. I guarantee someone has not only tried it but made it work. The question is how easy was it.

Windows is not going to release anything. It's up to Digi to make their product compatible. And Digi will because they have no choice. Win7 is here to stay and they won't be able to skip it like they did Vista (for all intensive purposes). Perhaps it's just that Digi hasn't published a new compatibility list or perhaps Digi is just dragging their feet.

Also, if you have a legal copy of Win XP Pro use it. It doesn't cost you. If you do NOT own a legal copy of XP Pro then ride out Vista until you are comfortable with the change. I don't know anyone yet who has regretted migrating from Vista to Win7.

My real point is that you are asking questions which would be better served over in the forum where EVERYONE is working with PT. I guarantee I could make it work, but I have a high level of computer expertise and I don't have the time or energy to provide unpaid product support. Not saying that to be mean, I just keep pointing you to Digi and you keep ignoring the hint.

A quick glance through a Win7 search shows lots of folks using Win7 Pro (because it's cheaper than Ult).
