Hi I'm a little confused about what I need to set up my studio. I've had little experiences with it but have played around at a couple other studios. Right now I have a casio keyboard with a midi out and a electric guitar. I'm about to purchase a Roland MV-8000 from a pawn shop for $600 also my parents are about to buy me a new imac and hopefully I'll get Logic with it. I do intend on studying music producing at school via what in Australia is called VCE which is more a less a small course in producing. I hope to in the future get a mic of some description and possibly a new piano. Do I need a interface and a mixer if so what do you recommend for each under $150 I was thinking of getting a M-Audio Fast Track Pro off some one on Ebay for interface if I need it and Yamaha MG102C for a mixer if needed. At the end of the day I have limited money and I don't want top of the line equipment I just want it to work and be able to learn and eventually if I take a lot of interest in it upgrade.

Or....Save you some money and buy a really beafed up P.C set up for just recording. For the price of a Mac you can get a PC to run circles around it. PC at the same or the half the price you will have the advantage with faster processor, RAM and more than likely for storage.
Do not fall into the Apple hype or the Logic hype. I learned the hard way. Unless you want to spend $3,000 on the nicer iMac's. iMac are super nice but if you are just buying for recording do not waste on a iMac and spend what is left from buying a PC and get a top of the line interface.

Yup, I concur. Good Macintoshes and good PCs are pretty much separated by about $1000 US in pricing difference. And $1000 US will get you some damn fine recording gear such as a Pre-sonus 8 XLR microphone input computer audio interface & 5 SM57's. This would be the hands down perfect entry level quality rock 'n roll recording system you could interface to a modern day multicore CPU PC. And with that audio interface comes some awesome multitrack audio software that is simple to understand and to use. Inexpensive Macintoshes are not supplied with Logic which ain't cheap. I've heard that there really isn't too much Logic to Logic unless you like Logic, like Mr. Spock does. Fascinating. I can live without Logic, since I don't have Macintoshes. And I don't personally know Mr. Spock. But then, if you're not really going to record anything except a rap vocal, you won't need 8 inputs. And if you only need 1 input, I wouldn't bother getting any audio interface that has a microphone input. No. I'd get a good analog to digital converter and a quality studio console microphone preamp such as an API or Neve. I mean even if your audio interface has a XLR microphone input, go ahead and waste the extra money on the quality preamp. Once you your self hear the difference, you'll never look back. And that's how they hit makers do it.
