I am having a tough time getting good distortion recording from my 4x12 cab. Ive tried all different Micing arrangements. I am using a sm-57 and or a Sennheiser E609. When I mic up a 1x10 combo amp get a sweet distortion rec. Does anybody have any suggestions on what my problem might be. This is driving me nuts.

and the amount of gain should not be overkill, maybe even try recording a take and then record another take with a diff mic on a different speaker on a seperate track, then pan them hard left and right so they're not getting into the other instruments way.

Assuming the 4-12 sounds good in the room it may be that one of the speakers is blown and you just happen to be miking it. Even new they all sound a bit differen't. Just grasping here. Usually a 57 two inches from the grill pointed at the dust cap seam is a good starting point. Also chek for phase issues with the cabinet. If one speaker is out of phase to the other three distant miking (greater than 1 foot) will pick it up and sound wacked. To test spkr phase use a 1.5 AA battery and apply the (+) terminal to the tip side of you cabinet and the (-) to the sleeve. The spkrs should all move outward 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. If one goes the wrong way it needs its leads reversed. Don't energize like this for too long or you may overheat the voice coil. Good Luck!
