Hi recording people,

I have a question that I hope one of you may be able to "shed some light on".

As it is I've noticed that Audeze (https://www.audeze.com/) has made some planar magnetic microphones, however, there's only just a bit of technical information on their webpages ... What I am curious about - and am looking for a bit more information about - is what these microphones' output level is, i.e. the output level from the membRane itself - without - any amplification.

Might one of you know about this?

I followed your link when you first posted, and eventually got to the Audeze microphones page called "specifications". I was disappointed to find that the only figures on that page were the prices, and I nearly had to widen my browser window to get the whole of a microphone price in view at one time.

My first instinct was that those pages were some audiophile joke, but then thought no, audiophiles want lots of figures, so that can't be right.

If Audeze have managed to defeat physics and find a way of making a super-large diaphragm microphone work over more than a few millisteradians of solid angle, then they have upstaged AT, who had to put 4 capsules in a square formation in their AT5040 to achieve anything like acceptable off-axis performance.

If you find anything that might be regarded as engineering specifications on these Audeze microphones, please post a link to them.

Thanks for your feedback. Following your mentioning of the AT5040 I have just read a couple of reviews of this microphone:

and from a positive perspective the reviews support my intuitive guess that larger microphone membranes may have indeed very good detail, tonal, and nuance reproduction (everything else being equal). However, the SOS review also mentions the directionality aspect - something to be considered ...
