All electronics have self-noise, even passive electronics, due to quantum perturbation and possibly magnetic hysteresis. But a quality instrument like an SM57 won't have much at all.

Usually the hiss comes form the pre-amp?

I hold a SM57 to my ears, right now,.. There is no noise and it won't talk to me either that dumm thing...
It is all passive... If you look, there are usually no Noise Levels stated in the specs of dynamic Mics from any manufacturer.

You experience more or less noise with active mics and their pre-amps inside.
But if you hear an audible noise from a mic ( using a good pre-amp) you better give it a kick.

Passive dynamic microphones (includes moving-coil types like the SM57 and also ribbons) have no active circuitry and so have an inherent noise level solely due to their impedance. If the impedance curve is known, the r.m.s. noise value can be calculated over a specified frequency band by applying the Johnson-Nyquist formula

Are you 'shure' the mic is a genuine Shure?
I got a counterfeit mic recently and those are crap.
