This is interesting, just saw the "Making of Tron" DVD. I'm not a movie person but I liked TRON. The musical score was really something, especially taken in the context of the day. It was done entirely by synth pioneer Wendy Carlos who also did the score for Clockwork Orange and some other known movies. She did an inrcredible job.

However they make zero mentoin of her on the Making if Tron DVD. Not one peep. The reason? She used to be a man. And while Disney enjoyed profiting off her, it fears any mention of the connection. My attitude towards other is live and let live, I've got no affinity for that lifestyle but at the same time I couldn't care less what other people do. This is about the music, and I think it was totally classless for them to spend 90 minutes explaining how this movie was made without a single mention of the person who created the entire musical score single handedly. I think that's a bit of a burn.

They do mention her in the review:

There's some other good tunes on the Soundtrack, most notably "Only Solutions" by Journey which was playing in the backgorund during the arcade scene. 8-)

I don't know the reason why but I find it hard to believe that that is the reason. Walter became Wendy way back in the 60's. I'm sure Disney knew about this It was pretty much common knowledge throughout the industry. With her fame for "Switched on Bach" it was kinda hard to hide the sex change thing.

However, for a very long time people wanted the tron soundtrack to be released because it was so cool (me included) but Disney wouldn't let it happen. That was until they re-released the DVD. Then they asked to release the soundtrack on CD.

You might be right. I think she made it on the TRON project on the down low because Lisberger liked her work, and that they intentionally removed all discussion of her from the "making of" documentary, and indeed all other public material from Disney about TRON, solely due to her proclivities.

I think that if John Williams had been the composer the "making of" documentary would have featured a full fledged interview and the fact would have been heavily promoted.

There's only one other plausible (albeit improbable) reason I can think of and that would be if Wendy Carlos specifically did not want to be mentioned in association with Disney. I think that's unlikely but, as always, I could be wrong...

Anyway you slice it, that was a hell of a job she did on that project. I've worked out some of the pieces a bit on keys just to get a feel for it and I've conluded she was truly inspired on that score. There's some awfully clever synth work in there.
