I found that I liked the AT 4050 the most for vocals and that the VTB Pre sounds pretty bad, especially when the 'tube' is mixed in.
Some other mics I liked:
Cad E100
mxl 69
RODE NTV
Studio Projects B1 (for guitar)
The AT 414 sounded a little too bright for my tastes. Most of the RODE mics sounded shrill. I was considering an NT1000 before I listened to these audio examples. The Mackie pres in Kurt Foster's demos were disappointing as well.
I still haven't found a good mic / pre combo for under $500. It seems like the FMR RNP / AT 4050 is the best option for vocals under $1000 (to my ears.)
IMO a great mic/pre combo for under $500 is a new combo: Electro

Electro Harmonix 12AY7 + AT3035
I think you'd shit if you heard that combo blind and had to guess what you were listening to.
