Hi all,

Working on a new song idea. Lyrics and soundcloud link are below. The drums are EZ Drummer 2, DAW is Reaper, vocals are all by me, Guitar is a PRS copy played through a Zoom G3 with an ENGL amp sim, solo is a placeholder as I am not a solo guitarist. I plan to add a proper solo later. Bass is MIDI using Trilian.

Critic on the song and mix so far are most welcome:

JONATHAN LINTON – POWER ADDICTION
(Words by Jonathan Linton, Music by Jonathan Linton)

A little taste has gone to your head
Now your hunger can’t be fed
You’ve changed, everyone can see
All because of dependency

There’s no denying
No sense trying
You’re a victI'm of power addiction

Subdivision, acquisition
You’re obsessed with power addiction
Inquisition, demolition
Lost your soul to power addiction

The Prognosis is bleak and black
Once an asshole, there’s no going back
Like a drug, if you abuse
You’ll overdose on the power you use

There’s no denying
No sense trying
You’re a victI'm of power addiction

Subdivision, acquisition
You’re obsessed with power addiction
Inquisition, demolition
Lost your soul to power addiction

SOLO

Subdivision, acquisition
You’re obsessed with power addiction
Inquisition, demolition
Lost your soul to power addiction
Unforgiven, the attrition
You’ll burn in hell from power addiction

Has a J. Priest kind of vibe - I can "hear" some operatic screams on this in my head - Wonder if you might take the two guitars and mix up the sound a bit so it sounds more like two different guitar players playing different guitars. That would add a bit more depth to the arrangement. What I'm looking for as well is a crescendo in the performances - particularly lyrics/vocals - I want the vocals to raise the stakes as we get deeper into the song - raise the intensity of the message - really sell it. I like it so far for sure.

Your top end is pretty harsh... on hi hat, snare, kick and OH's, as well as on vox. Did you by chance use an exciter plug of some kind on these?

All the drums could use less top end and more 'beef"... look to 240-260 hz on snare, less 4k - 8k...

All the way around, the mix sounds "thin" to me.

What type of room and monitors are at play here?

IMHO of course.

I see (and hear) that your using a Trilian vst bass for the song - I've used Trilion in my recent mixes, and it's been a constant struggle to get the damn patches to "fit in the mix." Your use of it is a good example of how this virtual bass program "sounds" great in solo mode (your intro), but doesn't provide those bass freqs that give you the proper bass "bed". I use Softube's Bass Amp Room for that purpose, and I would try boosting your bass at around 120 130 Htz. I visited the Omnisphere booth at NAMM recently, and gave them a bit of s#^t about it, lol
Good song

Hi there Luke,

Thanks for the feedback.

How do you route then Trilian to Bass Amp Room - I have that too. Do you turn off the amp sim in Trilian and route it to Bass Amp Room or route the full output from Trilian? Any setup info you can give would be highly appreciated. Even better, if you are using Reaper, it would be super if you could send an FX Chain or similar.

I wonder if soundcloud's convertion is not part of what I here too in the HF.. They are all mushy like bad convertion does..

Other than that, the song is nice but not wow. I'd like to be surprised it's pretty standard groove we can get tired of..
I think the guitars could have less bass and more bites in the mids..
to my taste anyway ;)

Keep sharing, if you make more version ;)
