hello all. Well as u have read i've had big trouble recording with my gear i hope you guys/gals can shed some light.
first of all let me tell u the gear i am using. I have a toshiba laptop with 1.5GB RAM, 1.66 GHZ duo centrino, using an Cubase SX as my DAW, and a macki onyx 1640 mixer with firewire as my interface.
I was tracking my band last night and i ran into the following problems:
1.first of all i used the aux sends for their monitor headphones and they could only hear out of one ear, the left side of the headphones.
2. when i was tracking them out of no where u hear, what i believe is called an audio time out or drop out, the audio drop out and this beep in place of it. It kept doing that and therefore distracted the musicians.
3. when i checked the audio it had recorded, on one track the audio did not record correctly, rather it was like a CD with scratches in the the sense that the audio recorded had skips; and i know thats not how the musician played it. there fore i have to track them all over again because the audio did not record right.
4. lastly even when i had all the faders down on the mixer i could still hear the band i don't know why. i think that maybe just be a macki mixer thing.
well if anyone can shed some light on these situation that would be great. Preferably how i can go about fixing them. I deeply appreciate any response

Are you recording onto the internal hard drive or an external secondary hard drive? If you are recording the audio on the internal drive, that is the first thing to change. It's never a good idea to record on to the same hard drive you are operating from. Also, laptops generally have slower hard drives which can compound the issue.

A drop out can result from many things, latency settings comes to mind as does programs running in the background. Several schools of thought on recording to the OS empowered hard drive. I track direct to it, have been all of this century with no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky:)

I can't tell you for sure what's going on, but I can tell you that I've tried Cubase Studio 4 on my Toshiba and had the same problems.
I thought my problem was Media Center Edition, but after installing XP Home, the problem still existed. I'm convinced the computer was just not made to handle audio recording.
Have you successfully been able to record prior to this without any problems?
