This will depend on how many tracks you'll be recording at once. If its only one or two then a USB device will serve you. If more then Firewire. It also depends on your computer. What type of inputs does it have? Probably both, so again its what your work flow will be.

Dude, get you a Focusrite Scarlett. Best in class preamps and converters. Also, comes with Scarlett plug-ins. Get you Studio Projects B1 or MXL V67 good for later mods. Next step ( i think i speak for everyone ), learn how to mix ha. The biggest challenge is to learn how to mix. I still have not learned it all the way. Its addicting.

If you can find a E-MU 0404 interface, get one.

Okay, the guy from Pennsylvania says they only want to record one thing at a time. Now this is not being very specific. One instrument? One vocal? One choir? One orchestra? One band? One bird? What is your electronics background? I think for a lot of you folks, one of those nice little Blue, Audio Technica and others USB microphone is exactly what you need. You can get into that for as little as $80 US and up through a Few hundred dollars US. You'll monitor everything through your USB microphone and/or your computer directly. Pick one out that includes some software bundled with it. You can save the rest of your bucks for the Chinese Christmas presents you have to buy everybody else.

Depends on what your goals and budget are, I have a firewire based MOTU 828 for when I'm at home. When traveling I use a M-Audio USB Fast Track.

The MOTU sounds much better, I do my mixing with it, in my treated room.

I'm a guitarist/composer mostly going direct into the interface, and using virtual instruments.
