hello everyone,my name is daniel and i've been into recording for 4 years now.mostly i record a few friends and anything i'm involved in. it'll started when i found an otari 8 track at a local pawn shop and since then the gear just keeps accumulating.lately i've been seeing a 12 channel tangent console in the local paper here for $90.it isn't clear which modelit is but it does have a "few" bad channels. my question is what is tangents reputation like? And would it be an interesting project to fix it. i'm sure anything would be an upgrade from the trashcam i have currently cus i'm still waiting to find a neotek for cheap.-daniel

Tangent...well, at least they were American made. Tangent was to the early 80's what Soundcraft was to the 90's, and Mackie has become.
The desk of choice for the local barroom. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's a Tangent over in the corner at the "R-O Virtual Bar & Grille".
For the most part, they sounded like shit, but still better than most Soundcrafts, and all Mackies. Much like Soundcraft, they had an 'upscale' desk (which wasn't as cool as Soundcraft's upscale desks) called the 3216.
This wasn't too awful  though fairly noisey, and marginally inflexible.
For $90, what the hell. You really have little or nothing to lose, and possibly a new flavor to gain. If you hate it, there's always eBay.

thanks for the reply. the mixer i curently have is a tascam m1600 it's an 8 bus 16 channel and does not have an outboard powersupply.i would probably keep it and treat the tangent like a fixer upper.i can see it now out on the front lawn on cinder blocks and a tarp. i'm sure part of it is equipment lust but i also feel that it is the weakest link in the chain right now. I slowly accumulating good mics, preamps and compressors and hopefully a better multitrack but then i have to mix it through the tascam.i think it would be interesting to go the mod route but the tascam is all one piece an very unmodular.thanks for the info.-daniel
