Hello All.

I have a Hardware Compressor, and a Finished Pro Tools Mix.

Now I want to Run the Finished Mix, Out From the MBox, Into a HW Compressor, then Back Into The Mbox[Inputs] (2 Track it).

But when I do it, I get a loud horrible signal and makes it pretty much impossible.

I have heard that this can be done, but I cannot achieve it.

Everything is hooked up correctly (As far As I'm Concerned.) I have a fast enough CPU/Ram. I am using a PC.

It seems that I can only record ... MBOX(Outputs) -> HW Compressor -> Different Hard Disk Recorder.(Inputs)

But Not...

MBOX(Outputs) -> HW Compressor -> Mbox/Pro Tools(Inputs)

I get a weird awful signal.

If anyone knows about this technique, please help me out, it would be gladly appreciated, THANK YOU.

yes, its where the colour begins IMO. There are some interesting OTB solutions that you should learn more on. Check out the SPL MixDream , Dangerous Music 2-bus and Roll Music's Folcrom which takes a different approach than the other two, that I'm very interested in as well.

That comp you have is cool but more for live IMHO, not really a benefit for what you are hoping for. Analog summing ( a hybrid DAW system) is what you are wondering about.

The reason why I prefer this way is because I (Personally) think HW Compressors have a more natural sound.

So thats impossible you say?

I've heard that some people knows how to do this.

The 266 isn't a particularly nice compressor. I had one. If you have a mix imported into a ProTools session and you have an interface with more than two outputs (like an MBox 2 PRO) it is possible. But, with only two outputs on a standard Mbox original or MBox 2 it can't be done.

In the case of an MBox 2 Pro, you would import the mix into a stereo track and route the outputs of that track to say outputs 3 and 4. From there you go to the compressor and back into inputs 1 and 2 into two new tracks.

The problem you are having now is that you're sending your stereo bus out to the compressor to two new tracks.......Okay....maybe there is a way. Try muting the tracks that you are recording to. This might eliminate the feedback loop. You absolutely cannot monitor the inputs. That is where the feedback loop is created. Of course, you will have absolutely no idea if your recording is any good until you have finished the take.

Which mbox do you have?

With the original mbox there is definitely no way of inserting a hardware compressor over your mix AND listening to it at the same time. You can process a mix through the compressor but you wont be able to hear it unfortunately. The way to do this is to connect everything the way you've got it now and mute the track you're recording back onto. It's only way not to create a feedback loop.

I think some of the newer mboxes have an extra SPDIF I/O that you could use for inserting hardware if you invested in a stereo SPDIF A/D/D/A... but then you might as well go ahead and get a new interface!

How many HW compressors have you heard? How many plugins have you heard? I don't mean free or cracked plugs. I mean the real deal (some of which might be free, but I digress).

Using an analog hardware compressor or other analog outboard has advantages over reasonable plugins only after a certain quality/price point has been passed. A DBX compressor is not there by a long shot. Your Bombfactory plugins are going to be better than that 266 by a long shot. When audiokid is speaking of hybrid systems, he is also speaking of the best quality equipment from the analog front end components to the AD and DA converters. Even the cabling gets important at this stage of the game.

I prefer hybrid setups myself, too but it is important to look at the process objectively and not through advertising or GS cause celebre. In my opinion, there is no advantage to trying hybrid anything with an MBox which is generally considered adequate at best.

Better to not complicate your setup and learn to capture the audio better in the first place. Which could be said of nearly all of us to a degree.
