I just got me one of these silver beauties and it sounds wonderful.
However, I'm having an issue with it's rear stereo inputs. When I plug my synth into them, there is very little gain going into the Penta.
Even with the Input Gain knob turned all the way up and the synth's volume at max, I can barely get to meters to blink past -20!
The compressor can be engaged at will, and of course, this helps get more gain out, but the principle is that I shouldn't need to use the comp if I don't want to, a maxed out synth driving a maxed out preamp should = reasonable gain, no? Why is it so low?
The front panel mono input seems to work fine when I plugin a guitar, lots of gain and some to spare. Same with the XLR input and the C1 mic, great sound.
Any help on this would be great! Thank you!

I would normally agree, but on this unit, the 1/4" balanced jacks on the back are designed for instruments. After all, it's a stereo compressor/pramp.
Should I still convert my unbalanced synth out cables to balanced going to the Penta, would that help a great deal?

On most gear, the rear inputs are not set up for plugging in an instrument - that's what the front panel DI is for. If you want to run a stereo synth into the penta, you might try using two direct boxes and running into the XLR inputs.
