Hi Gentle G. Well, I've just built my DAW in a Chieftec( Dragon Midtower) case and I thought that it wasn't silent enough. This is what I did.
I bought a Enermax PSU, I bought Magic-fleece and covered the inside of the case, I bought new case fans (Papst 12 dB) and finally I bought "No-vibe" HD mounting kit for the HD's. So now My DAW is quite silent.And now I'm happy.
If you want it better than that I think that you should go for a water-cooling system. Since my CPU fan is silent I didn't replace that one. Maybe you should listen if your own CPU fan is noisy.

Main source of noise in psu at the moment, case is enhancing it... after that I guess the hd's, not sure

So enermax is the psu I should go for???
if so, which type? (I need lots of watts)

I currently have a aluminium bigtower, should I upgrade?

A few good solutions are to look into silent omponents like PSU and fans, which by themselves cut down a great amount of noise; a second inexpensive step is to tighten every joint and screw securely so that it doesn't vibrate, then seal each little hole or slit with some tape or foam: I lined the side hatches of my case with some 3mm thick foam and used it as a "shock mount" for all moving parts like drives, cd, drive bays and PSU.

Then I moved the PC inside a wood case that is part of my working desk (kinda like the elias Fats suggested, but I built it myself) in the control room with a glass hatch on the front (sealed with foam trims) and air exhaust (with silent fan) and cabling ports on the back; the inside is lined with sonex foam. Although it's not completely dead silent it's dramatically more silent than the nude thing.

One suggestion: if you move the PC inside some sort of cabinet be sure to have proper air circulation for cooling as any kind of foam that cuts down noise will raise the temperature in such a small cabinet, expecially with Athlons that are known for their high temp operations (I could almost dry my hair in front of the CPU and PSU fans of my 1800XP :D :d: .) and in the long run, or in the summer it could lead to some damage.
