Man, you horn players really stick together. My daughter is in music school at Duquesne and has a lot of friends trying out for service bands. I didn't realize they had to learn to use their instruments as tactical weapons. She plays bari sax which might be quite lethal.
I have a sister who moved to in Sandpoint Idaho a little less than a decade ago. When I get around to visiting her some day I'd like to visit some of the people I know from neighboring states, but ... I don't know if you've noticed this ... all the frickin' towns are thousands of miles apart. She says this is a feature, not a bug. Guess you get used to it.

Only the Marine Corps requires weapons training. Which is the best part about it! The DC bands and the Academy bands and all the Air Force bands are very very nice cake jobs. Also, all of the DC bands have a recording engineer and various versions of "studios."
In the Fleet Marine Forces where I was, I got my start when we brought in an outside company to train us. I got luckier when I passed muster enough to moonlight with them and get further training to boot.
The Mountain West is great. We are a bit far from each other out here but that fits a guy who is rather antisocial. Let's just say the Corps and I fit well together despite my orchestral background!
Denver is only 8 hours....if it isn't snowing! Seattle is 13 though it took me 27 the first week in March. But it is gorgeous. You should see the folder of pics I took for publicity the last time I was a soloist with an orchestra. Some people think they're photo shopped.

Oh and bari sax reeds in the service are deadly! Kind of like Chinese fighting fans!
One of my favorite true stories is falling out for a ceremony and having the Enlisted Conductor say, "There are four piccolos out here. I want you four to be the best damn imitation of Milli Vanilli I've ever seen!"
