I have been searching a lot trying to find out more about these products. Heres my premise, I am looking to upgrade my computer and interface. I have a usb and want to get either Firewire or a PCI input. From what i read it would be a good move to get a nice interface with good pre's. I record in my room so there is no real studio, yet. I am peicing the studio together little by little so won't be able to get a nice preamp for while.
The MoTU 896mk3 Firewire has gotten good reviews
vs
RME Hammerfall
vs
MoTU Traveler
vs
RME firewire 400
any thoughts on any of these?
thanks

They are all good. So, get the one that makes the most operational sense to you. Forget about the stupid specifications. Those are all high-quality units and specifications in this realm mean very little. You want the one that will be more intuitive for you to use & comprehend. So ask to read their manuals first before you purchase. It's like riding a bicycle. They all have two wheels. They all work the same. But you'd have to find the one that fits you right in not because one is cooler looking than the other.

have a quick question. I might have a chance to get a motu 828 at a good price. I know it only has 2 mic pres, but i has those 1/4 inputs in the back. My question is, i have adapters for mic -> 1/4. Would that be a bad way to record extra mics on this unit? any experience with this?

RME make the items with the most bang for the buck. The FF400 is a lightyear ahead of the MOTU things you listed. The Hammerfall series can work depending on the PCI card and your configuration of Ins/Outs. So of the ones you listed, the FF400 is definitely the best option.
