Hi all, I'm at the stage where I think upgrading my pres might be a good plan. What I wanna know is are all these high-endpres worth the extra cash over their budget rivals? Is there a real noticable difference between them and the budget stuff? I'm guessing that there won't be too much difference on a single track but the cumulative effect of using better pres could make a marked difference to a full tune. Am I on the right lines here?
To start with I'd maybe look at a single Great River nv type pre as a general purpose pre (with some colour) to replace my Joemeek mq3. I'm gonna be building some api type pres too and am half way through making some general purpose clean pres as well.
Does this sound like a worthwhile course to take or do you think I'd be better off spending my cash elsewhere. My room is treated and I have a small but fairly decent collection of mics.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Ian.

for a $1000.00 it seems a bit much for a single channel pre. however, having the ME-1NV is well worth the price tag. as it has become my main vocal, bass, and kick drum pre. a single channel is very economical as you begin the quest of collecting additional flavors and colors....good luck

I think there is a huge difference between cheaper pres and their more expensive counterparts. The MP 2NV is a great one, fast becoming a favorite for me. I can think of no reason for you not to go that route. Some API style pres would be nice too. It sounds to me as if you have a pretty good game plan..
