Hi,
I'm considering buying a pair of Neumann (Gefell) M582. I was told that they are pretty much the same as Neumann KM54. Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks in advance.

The M582 is a modular microphone that had several different capsules available to it. THey are larger than KM 54's and use an ec92 tube in most cases rather than the KM54's AC701. In short, parts wise, they are not at all the same, but they both do the same thing very well. They are both great for acoustic stringes instruments. Good luck.

I've never heard the Gefell's but I've heard the other Gefell stuff and didn't care for it. :)
I used them the other day on a laaarge string ensemble, WOW!!! tons of smooooth detail on top and a ton of low end.

I recently acquired a pair of consecutive serial numbers of the mics M582's from the early 70's. Power supplies built by Korbe. A well trusted engineer friend of my located them and recommended them to me. All I can say, is if you pass on them, let us know where they are available. They are fast becomming my dessert island mics for percussion, guitar, piano, and all other things small diaphram by nature. How is that for a recommendation.

All I can add is that I read some tips from a top Nashvile engineer in Mix magazine about how a Neuman pencil valve mic & an SSL compressor was great for acc gtr.
The studio I was working at happened to have one, (model???) anyhow the tip was great, it DID sound amazing....
