This should be pretty easy to knock out. First of all I have never messed much with preamps and I ran into this problem. I am recording vocals by running a KEL Audio HM1 into a Sebatron Thorax Channel strip and from there to the box.

While singing I move between a semi-soft falsetto and a very chesty non-distorted yell. I am having a really hard time making the falsetto audible on the track without ramming the VU meter so hard into the red that it audibly clicks when yelling.
Now for the questions.

1. Is running the VU meter of the Sebatron into the red "clipping" and will it cause distortion?

2. Is there something I can do to even out the extremely dynamic vocals with the preamp or is this more of a mic technique issue?(I try to back off the mike on yells and move close for falsetto but there is still to much dynamic range when mixing for me to make the falsetto audible without blowing my ears out on the sceams)

I hope this made sense. Thanks for the help.
