I have a voice project I need to do in 8 bit, 8K. Everything I normally record is 44.1K, 16 bit or even 96K, 24 Bit but in downsampling the quality is terrible. We have SoundForge which can work that low, but we need some hardware to work with. No more request than we have for this we don't want to spend more than we have too. Something decent quality we can plug a mike into that ouputs to usb would be great that soundforge could use would be great. Any ideas?

8 bit, 8K Recording
I know it will be terrible but since it is being played over the telephone who cares. Still yet I am forced to deliver the files in that format. Any hardware ideas would be appreciated. Again, I would like to use SoundForge just need something I can plug a microphone into and supports these lower levels.

When I've done this type of stuff I've recorded either into Soundforge or whatever other stuff at 44.1/16 and THEN downsampled. It's called "resample" in SoundForge. Resample to 8kHz with antialias and high accuracy and then save as whatever type of output you need. Most phone systems need something A or U law, etc. Get some specs on the final file output and go from there. It's a post-processing gig on a normal recording, as opposed to recording natively in that sample rate/bit depth.
