Lots of Zep.
Early Beatles "Hard Day's Night" "Help" "With the Beatles"
Lots of the old Krupa and Rich type big band stuff.
There's just something about the sound of drums recorded with room and air and life to them that I like more than the close tight sound.
I guess it depends on the music, as that tight sound really works as well.
I just love the sound of those old big band recordings, early Beatles, Zep, Stones, they really rock. There is something to be said about recording the power of a whole band, or at least a whole drumset, as opposed to recording a drum from 1 inch away.
On the other hand Stewart Copeland's tight little drum sounds really work for his style, and the sound of the Police. Love his playing.
Cheers!

PLEASE tell me you are kidding? I do have to admit, I like Alex's Snare sound, but his kick is ALWAYS so whimpy, and his toms on 1984 sound like Simmons crap! I am still so confused at VH's unusually "thin" low-end productions! No subs needed - EVER! (Maybe on OU812 for the low-frequency Keyboard pads, but THAT's IT!)
I like all kinds of drum sounds from the "Over Processed In Your Face Punch You In The Gut" sound, to the "Jazz" room sound.
I have REALLY been digging Medeski, Martin & Wood the past year or so. Their progression is really interesting, from more of a classical "Jazz" sound on "Its A Jungle In Here", to a funky/dirty/overly-warm analog niceness in more recent releases ("Combustication", etc). VERY, VERY nice drums there and a stellar player.
For an electronic drummer, Bela Fleck's drumatar, "Future Man" gets some pretty good sounds, and makes them believable. He has a bit of "machine gunning" on the fast snare rolls, but otherwise, very natural sounding elcectrics. Not to mention, he plays things no kit player ever could!

Tom Petty: Wildflowers
Jellyfish: "Ghost at Number One" (and the rest of Spilt Milk)
Beck: Sea Change
Led Zep: "When the Levee Breaks" (of course)
Fiona Apple: "Limp" (Jon Brion prod. with Matt Chamberlin on drums - really one of the best drum records in a decade).
I'm probably leaving out some, but those are always near the top of my list.
Vanessa Carleton's "A Thousand Miles" is pretty fat! Abe Labori
Vanessa Carleton's "A Thousand Miles" is pretty fat! Abe Laboriel Jr gets some INCREDIBLE sounds out of his kits. Man, that bass drum!
Another Fiona Apple: "Fast As You Can"
Most 311 has tight 'n poppy drum sounds
Again mentioning Medeski, Martin & Wood (Any album) - as one mention is just NOT enough
Some of the Tribal Tech stuff - "Face First"
Anything Dennis Chambers plays on
Smashing Pumpkins "Gish" and "Siamese Dream"
Morphine "Cure For Pain" (Very nice)
Shall I go on?

My favorite drummers are Michael Shrieve(Watch Santana's Woodstock '69 performance and you'll be a believer too.) Jimmy Chamberlin(Smashing Pumpkins) always had a really nice snare sound. I can't recall at the moment who RATM's drummer was, but I really liked his use of unusual sounds(cowbells, etc.) I think Led Zeppelin's drummer takes the cake though. He had a heavy-ass sound(mostly due to his two floor toms.)

1. Deftones - Deftones. the whole album. specially the bassdrum sound.
2. Eighteen Visions - Vanity. the whole album. I just LOVE the clean and crisp cymbal and hihat sound of this album. one of my favourite drum sounds.
3. Deftones - Digital Bath. THE best snare sound i've heard, super cool balance in all sound.
4. Darkest Hour - Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation. the whole album. very cool "way to compressed" sound :) it really suits that album.

i would have to say the last 2 tool albums. Both a perfect circle albums. Hansons last cd, the deftones last 2 albums, the last blink 182 cd, mudvaynes cds, the last the used album.
The drums on all of these albums have such a great and clear sound, the cleanest i think is the one by the last 2 albums of the used and hanson.

i love orange county kits...311, slipknot, limp bizkit, and whatever numetal/screamo bands are using em...funny how mostly corporate kid rockers use them. anyone who has heard and oc kit in person...i am telling you it will change your life. we just laid down our drum tracks and we are one of the first(contemporaneously) to convince our producer to not use triggers on the kick or snare.
i agree with the lakini's juice album...bad ass drums. tool...of course...those big ass 24" kicks sound so nice.
i really like rammstein's snare sound..that is about it there. i think apc's drum tones blow ass..billy isnt that great of a producer imho.
i like the drum tones on load and reload way better than the black album tones.
funny how there are two groups on this post...1. more genuine and 2. compressed to unrecognizable ideals(i consider myself in the 2nd category).

I second the orange county comment, I don't have one personaly but a friend of mine has one and the kick sounds unbelievable. His band opened up for a band at a nice venue and usally the opening bands don't sound as good as the headlinner, but this OC kick drum had to be one of the best sounding kickdrums i've heard live, even better than the headliner, I think the foh guy liked it too because it was nice and loud.
they are expensive kits too, comparable to dw and the like, but worth it, and man I do love the oc's on slipknots debute album. mmmmm i love drum sounds, some times a little too much. If i don't like the drums on an album then i don't like the band. its just that simple.
yeah, i forgot to add these bands

I agree with most of the stuff already mentioned, so I'll throw in a few I think y'all missed
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside, natural, full, kinda dark-sounding kit
Green Day - the new album, drums sound phenomenal, but unfortunately are not played very well
Pearl Jam - Vs., whatever room they recorded these drums is in f'n perfect!
Wallflowers - just that headlight song, snare is incredible
Worst drums - Van Halen, less hi-hat PLEASE!!

Interesting.. hard to separate great drum performances from great drum sounds but I'll try..
- Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow
the drummer was incredibly tight (Bailey?) and the sound so crisp; if you put your head between the speakers its like you're sitting on the throne  I mean stool  ah you know what I mean!
- Manu Katche on Robbie Robertson's self titled album (Robbie Robertson)
Somewhere down the Crazy River just had a wicked atmosphere to it
Peter Gabriel - So
- more Manu Katche? Sledgehammer etc..
- Okay speaking of gabriel we can't leave out Phil Collins classic
toms on - In the Air Tonight
do do doo doo da dum da dum dum dum :D
- and of course Ringo and Martin, very signature sound..
like "I Read the news Today", "Come Together"
- Ralph Humprey on Frank Zappa's Overnight Sensation "Movin' to Montanna Soon - Gonna be a Dental Floss Tycoon"
aahh I've only scratched the surface - those are the oldies! There's lots of recent stuff but some other time..
Steve Smith's sound on Journey Frontiers. I like his Vital Infor
Steve Smith's sound on Journey Frontiers. I like his Vital Information stuff too.
Phil Collins on his white Gretch kit, especially the tom fill on
"In The Air Tonight".
Alex VanHalen has a cool snare sound and kick too sometimes.
Bonham's snare and kick are super.
Charlie Watts has a great snare and kick sound, though his timing sux.
Rick Allen has some good sounds, to me Pyromania has awsome drum sound.
Vinnie Coliouta has a sharp/nice sound on his playing with Sting.
ect, ect.
I like lots of different drum sounds from wide open to highly focused.
It would take at least 3 different kits to satisfy me sonically.

i'd say
simon phillips on toto's tambu and mindfields
phil collins on ...but seriously and genesis a trick of the tail
mike portnoy on awake and, yes, images and words
rod morgenstein on kip winger's songs from the ocean floor
morgan rose on sevendust's animosity and seasons
and many others. but they're the one's that came to my mind.
I'm going to put Zeppelin aside, merely because we know it kills
I'm going to put Zeppelin aside, merely because we know it kills.
The best drum sound I've ever heard was on one of the most obscure major label records one could hope to find...
- A song called "Mr & Mrs Smack" from Sell Me a God , by a band called "Eat" from England, produced by the venerable Tim Palmer. (The rest of the album was crap.) The shear vastness of these wonderful, room-tone drums threaten to devour the whole song, which is somehow mixed very well despite that fact!
- Maroon5: Songs About Jane "Hard to Breathe", "This Love" - (Matt Wallace).
- Simple Mids - Sparkle In The Rain - (Steve Lillywhite).
- Tears For Fears - Raoul and the Kings of Spain - "Sorry" (Again, Tim Palmer!)
- The Cult - Love - considering this was the middle of the 80's, extremely tasteful drum sound, punchy as all hell (and expertly played by Mark Brziezki of Big Country fame)
Ah, crap: and of course "In the Air Tonight". Love the Collins/Padham Listen Mic Compressor tone! :D
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (entire album) Unfortunate
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (entire album)
Unfortunately, that's the only one I can name. Most of the drum sounds I really like I hear on the local non-profit radio during jazz weekend, and I don't catch their names. My favorite sound is that natural and unhyped sound that jazz is famous for.
Oh, I did think of another one I like:
Mannheim Steamroller - Tocatta (from Fresh Aire III)
That's about all I can think of for now.
