Hi guys,
I have a dilemma with my UAD-1 system and I thought I would share it on here to find out if anyone else has had the same issue.
Now, before you jump on me and tell me to upgrade, I am fully aware that the UAD-1 is old and unsupported. Regardless, I have a few UAD plugins that I use and I'm quite happy with them. I am not a plugin junky and use a few selected plugins to get the job done. While I'm a 21st Century digital boy I still have that silly old school mentality of focusing on the INPUT instead of the mix.
The back story is that I bought a UAD-1 and a UAD-1e second hand from my studio partner when he exited our partnership a couple years back. The UAD-1 card is the original "Mackie" rev. 1.0 card. It's vintage digital! Nevertheless, it works fine and does what I need. It came pre-loaded with the 1176LN and the LA-2A, which happen to be two of my go-to plugins for lots of sources. To me, they are the most versatile of the plugins I have as far as UAD goes. The UAD-1e does not have these plugins authorized.
The problem I'm facing here is that I can't get the aforementioned plugins to run on BOTH cards because, as I have been told by UA Customer Support, I don't technically own the 1176LN and the LA-2A because they were hard-encoded to the Mackie UAD-1 card and the licenses weren't transfered when the cards changed ownership.
I don't understand this. If I am amble to legitimately use the 1176LN and the LA-2A on the UAD-1 card, how can I not own them? That is what we bought when we originally bought the cards. Furthermore, how could these licenses not have been transfered along with the cards? All the other plugin licenses did. I find this ridiculous. UA has basically told me that they can't help me and are trying to coax me into buying the two plugins again if I want to use them on both cards. That works out to about $600 that I just don't have lying around. I feel a little like this is extortion.
My logic is thus:
- The LA-2A and 1176LN are hard encoded to the UAD-1 card
- I bought the card
- I transfered the ownership to my own account
- I own the cards and plugins that come with it
Am I being unreasonable? I feel this is a technicality that they should be a bit more sympathetic to. I realise I am not a high profile customer and don't spend thousands of dollars each year on their plugins, but that's because I am not a plugin junky and get the job done my own way. I live in South Africa and the ZAR/USD rate is not very good so $299 may seem like a little bit of cash to you guys, but it's a huge chunk of my salary here.
Anyway. If anyone else has had this experience, please can you offer me some input on the matter? Is UA not gong to budge on this matter?
Cheers

this kind of thing is what makes me hate digital. if you owned a couple of LA2s and 1176's you could use them on anything. but with digital you run into all these kind of upgrade and licensing issues.
