Alright so we have tracked two songs since we built the studio in my basement. I was wondering if I could get some critique from all you sound gurus. http://www.myspace.com/sidewalkprophets - the one i want your feedback on is the first track called The Real American. Let me know where I can improve!
thanks,
Ben

WOW! I really loved The Real American. (I'm one, proud to be one and working at Voice Of America) Now if you hadn't told me this was "Christian music" I wouldn't have known? Quite a marvelous job of recording and mixing. However, unlike the previous "kids" observations, I very much like the way your drums sounded. They felt powerful and realistic without being overly hyped.
I did feel that you're going for a nice round vocal sound. What I thought was lacking was a little more presence, a little more bite to the vocal? It was mellow and round sounding. Kinda' like 40 pounds overweight. Now I know there is a fat guy in your " Myspace" photo, but that's not quite what I'm referring to. If you believe that added presence will cause added sibelence, and don't like that, have you considered using a "De-Esser"? That way, you get the BITE without the BALK.
You have made me believe! That "God Gave Rock And Roll To You".

thanks for your critiques and we'll take as many more as you guys will give. Yeah...I agree on the vocals - oddly enough we talked ourselves in to going for a "journey" heavy on the verb feel for the vocals. I will throw the de-esser on there and see what comes of it. I think the drums are what make me most proud about the recording.. it was done in the basement - 10x10 concrete room.
keep the critique coming!

Very clean, I like it. The drums seem to lack the up front, punchy feeling. A little flat. That's all that I can hear that stood out (or lack of standing out). Guitars were very clean though the distortion seemed a little fragile sounding, I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with it. But thats just what I heard. I'm not saying "more bass more bass!" I'm just saying there is a lack of oopmh as far as I can hear. I like it overall though ^.^
