hi all,

this may be a dumb question, but is it possible that some instruments can be too big for a mix? i just recently completed tracking 2 guitars for a song that my band is working on. i am happy with the tones and think the guitars sound good but when i start putting things together in the mix, they almost seem too big. it's like i'm trying to fit something really big in a smaller space? has anyone experienced this as well?

Yes, I find it's very common for an individual track to soung great when soloed, but out of place in the context of a full mix.
At least it's too big, rather than too small or thin. Try low- and high-shelf cuts to thin out the guitars a little, this should open up some space for other instruments and help the gtr sit in the mix better.

If something is taking up too much space in the mix, thin it out. Don't do it in solo! EQ in the track, it helps to hear things in context. It's easier to make things smaller than bigger in my experience.

The song is talking to you, and you don't totally believe it. Trust the song and your instincts.

Have Fun! ;)
