Hey guys,
One of the albums I really love for drum sounds is Sixteen Stone and I kind of wanted to go for that sound on an upcoming recording. As you can probably tell I'm a bit of a newbie here esp. with recording drums. What I'm hearing on this particular album (and it's not exactly unique to this album, just an example) is like some added harmonic content on all the drums, esp. the cymbals, hi hats etc... It's like on the vinyl editions of Nirvana's albums I can hear a really nice breaking up of the frequencies when he hits the crash cymbals.
What exactly am I hearing here? Is it just heavy compression on the drum bus with like a 1176, or am I just hearing the sound of analog tape coming through? How can I emulate this sound?
Hope that's enough clues for you to figure out what I'm talking about. Like I'm said I'm new to it.

Listening to that album, I definately understand the appeal of the drum sound. I need to get in the studio to listen on cans, but here on the comp speakers I am not hearing anything unusual. Sounds like some compression and verb to me. One thing that Is sticking out, is the obvious quality drumset, room and mics. The snare drume sounds awesome. Probably a deep wooden shelled snare. The cymbals and hats remind me of a sound I used to get in Berklee's Studio A when I used a pair of earthworks as overheads. I definately think you should use small diaphagms instead of large diaphragms, if you are going for that cymbal sound. I am sure there are things I am not hearing, due to my current listening environment. But, one thing I can say with certainty, is that this is not a bedroom drum sound. This is a studio sound with a nice kit and mics.
