hi guys, i've been reading a lot about companies that do expensive remakes of the old classic mics (U47, C12, ELAM 251 etc), but unfortunately the majority of the info i can find comes from the companies own web sites or web sites that sell the brands. obviously not the least biased information. i've been checking out designs by wagner, korby and soundelux. they all make claims, such as their mics are precisely equal to the originals, or are better than 9 out of 10 originals they were tested against, but has anyone actually used one of these remakes? i'm most interested in the U47, but am having a hard time finding unbiased users. are any of these companies better than the others? is there any point gettting a remake, or should i just bite the bullet and search for an original vintage mic?

thanks!

It's hard to get real comments because very few people have heard what most of the great old obsolete mic sounds like. At this point in time they each have aged differently and have had various levels of mods or maintnenace so they all don't sound the same.

Most of the makers of these kind of old mic re-issues seem to have a real passion and are legit in making fine products that can stand on their own merit reguardkess if they are exactly the same as the originals.

Exactly. You will not be disappointed in the quality of these mics. They can say all they want about duplicating the sound of a vintage mic and perhaps they do.I'm sure this hype is to sell these to those who regularly use vintage mics and would like something a little less brittle due to age and wear....Whatever the case, and particularly the Soundelux,They have created a mic that stands on its own merits of quality and does so with modern components. In short, a mic ready to begin its own journey to old age and the sound that emanates through those number of years of experience.I have used the U99 and the U195. I love them.I spent a lot of time on a pair of 70's U87's and a U67.The Soundelux mics sound as good if not better than any Neumann I've heard. And they're all fantastic....But thats just me...And I love mics more than any other piece of gear in the studio. So sue me.
