i'm in a bit of a dilemma: i want a pair of microphones, but don't know what to get. I currently have an at-4050 and a RODE nt2-a and, as much as i would like a matched pair, if i could get one of these microphones slightly used then i should be fine for right now. if you could pick a pair of these two microphones, which would you pick? i'm mainly using these as drum overheads and any other stereo recording i might come across. also, would a pair of nt5's just be better? as far as i can tell, i can get these mics at roughly the same price, so that isn't a factor. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have pairs of both 4050 and NT2-A, but I don't use them for drum OH, as I prefer SDCs in that role. I have recently been using Rode NT55s (cardioid capsule fitted) with excellent results.

For other uses, NT2-As are wonderful as an M-S pair but like most switchable-pattern LDCs don't work so well for A-B omni. Again the NT55s, this time with the real omni capsules, give better results in A-B at this price level.

As with many models in the AT range, I find the AT4050s work best as as X-Y stereo pairs or as individual mics.

thank bent and boswell. i have a feeling that some time down the line, i'll end up having pairs of both sets of mics, just because i like them both very much, but for the time being, i guess i'm leaning towards the 4050, but it's not set in stone yet. after this purchase however, my sights are definitely on a pair of the NT55s. if anyone else has any opinions they'd like to add it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are looking to get a complimentary pair for either of your's your best bet is the AT4050. AT has and still does put the 4050's through such rigorous testing that they claim that the sound of a 4050 whether 5 years old or 5 days old should be as close as possible, technically making any two 4050's a match (hence, not really offering a matched set of 4050's). So a slightly used one will likely work well as mate for your other 4050....
