It's been making it's way into the market place, from what I understand, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it yet- the most anticipated piece of gear to come along in a while, the Really Nice Mic Pre. Anyone have an opinion? Doc.

I have had the RNP for a little over a month and I own the Universal 2-610 as well, so I would just like to state that the RNP is a kick ass little pre that has made quite a difference since Zythum Studios got it!
I am finishing Production now of a Garage Album that features 18 bands. We are calling it: "Purple Iron Hat" and the RNP was there on some of the last sessions.
It helped The Protestant Conspiracy on "Bat Macumba" , the guitars just shimmered! Very impressive.
The direct ins are nothing to sneeze at ither! When Ceedy Talking People did Zappa's "Take your clothes off when you dance" , we had the bass and guitars going in direct and they came out amazingly!
I have not worked with them enough at this time to make a more exclusive comment, however, my Chief Engineer, Sam Kinddleson loves the RNP and wants us to use them more on the next album.

I have had mine for about 2 months now and have overdubbed some tracks on existing projects but I haven't started a project from scratch yet.
My previous set up was a Mackie 1604 vlz Pro for most of my tracks with the occasional Tube MP for Bass tracks. So here is my opinion thus far.
Compared to the Mackie the RNP is much more full and 3 dimensional throughout the mids and low end.On keyboard when I tried to overdub some new material using the RNP vs. the Mackie the sound quality was so much more robust I couldn't use it. I had to go back to the mackie so it would match. We later prefered the RNP to the point we just re-recorded the whole mess.
At first it was a more subtle difference on voice and acoustic than what I hoped for but after layering 6 vocals and 3 guitars what you realized is they are definitly fuller sounding than the mackies ,but there is no muddiness or odd buildup of freqencies. It seems you can stack all day with the pre without any bad build-up. I know many people consider this a colored pre on the dark side, but not to me, at least with my experiance. Possibly darker compared to a Grace 101 or Great Rivers (neither of which I have any experiance). Any way I would gladly have 4 channels of this pre as my foundation of my studio before adding something with more character. I have done some preliminary Drum recording that sounded good (need to experiment on mic placement) I never could get the pre to crap out, It had a lot more head room than my mics did.
Anyway perhaps someone else can chime in. :w:
