Kinda depends on what you want to compress........for vocals, Waves Renaissance....for drums, Blockfish.... for guitar & bass, either Sonitus or Waves RennAxx... for stereo mix squashing, Blue Compressor....for slight mainmix compression, back to Renaissance. Just like in the hardware world, each plug will have its best & highest use.

I generally go with the Waves Renaissance for slightly "colored" compression/limiting.

But lately I've been reverting back to the basic PT compressor. I find that if I put too many "higher-end" plug-ins on a mix, things get too cloudy.

I still mostly compress before input with a real compressor, usually a Distressor or a Pendulum.

Don't forget the UAD collection... I don't use plugs a lot, but I rarley use anything more than the UAD stuff if I do...

for me it's the Sony Oxford for clean, uncolored compression... love this one... great GUI and a great sound.

and, the UAD-1 stuff for colored compression or squashing (LA2A my fav for pushing drums a bit over the edge)

Does anyone make a "host-based" VST or Direct-X LA-2A plug-in (aside from the UAD-1)? I can't find one anywhere. An 1176 would be nice, too :)

I like the PSP Vintage Warmer, Nuendo's Magneto, and Waves Renissance. I also like the L1 Mono, and the L2 on certain tracks (heavy-hard stuff).
