I'm just a rookie who records stuff in his bedroom, and most of you guys are pros who really know their stuff, so I appreciate you dropping by to listen to my work.
This is the first song I am mixing of a 10 track praise and worship album I have been working on since July. I am open to hearing comments and criticism on whatever stands out to you guys, but there are a couple specifics I am wondering about:
-Are certain instruments too wet?
-How does the piano sound to you guys? I'm not happy with how it's sitting in the mix. It doesn't seem to really cut through. The piano I have in there is the NI Vienna Concert Grand. I had the NI New York in there before, panned harder to the left, but it sounded even worse to my ears.
-Do you think it would be a good idea to pan the two vocal harmonies to one side? Right now it has kind of a choir feel to it, with the melody in the center, and each harmony on either side.

I like good contemporary Christian music. I produced a lot of jingles with Don Moen, LOL, later to only hear his Christian hits with similar thematics to the jingles we cut years earlier LMAO. When you've got a good melody, you can't let go of it. LOL. And a Soul Train Music Award nomination for best engineered live gospel. Here is what I'm hearing and what I like and dislike about what you've done.
You have recorded everything quite expertly. No problems there. I found the guitar in the opening of the song to be obnoxiously loud. And then the vocal came in and made my head goes splat on the wall behind me. Which was also a kick in the you know where. I think his vocal would be better served with a greater amount of compression and a slightly faster attack time. And for the guitar you might want to do something similar and bring its level down a bit?
The background vocals sounded nice, and if you could actually hear them, which I barely could. So those could be pushed up higher and you might want to put a little extra RMS compression on those?
Bass was smooth, a little flabby without much definition and could probably benefit by a little limiting to get it to set better and make it a better underliner, with a little tighter sustain.
Piano? I don't even remember the piano? So obviously it really did not make me take note since I missed all of the notes? I think it was because I was too overwhelmed by the lead vocal sound?
