So I've always loved recording.. And have pretty much got the hang of capturing a good sound.

But I can't seem to grasp the stages after that (compression etc).

All I can afford is software with my part-time job (as a student).

What are the best compressor/limiter plugins that are available to someone like me?

You're not going to like me for this - but I want to be able to brickwall audio cleanly. Whenever I try I get some static. It seems to disappear when I mix it with the other tracks and then sounds fine, but I'd be a lot more comfortable if it just wasn't there.. Y'know?

I currently use Voxengo Elephant 3.1 because I heard it was fantastic for this (which it is - it does its job) but like I said I get a bit of static. Is there any other plugin out there that can do it better or am I just not using Elephant right?

Free ones might work.

Functional is something I prize over sound quality at my level.

I take it you want VSTs?

You could use [="link removed[/]="link removed[/] to find plugins for anything you need, or you can follow some recommendations...

Compressor, I like to use [ReaComp[/]="http://www.reaper.f…"]ReaComp[/] from that plugin pack. The XComp is sometimes useful too.

Limiter, I like this for soft limiting: [="http://gvst.co.uk/gmax.htm"]GMax[/]="http://gvst.co.uk/g…"]GMax[/].

[="link removed limiter"[/] you might want. I've never used it as I hate brickwalling anything. Except cars.
Hoooo hah, I love the smell of burnt rubber in a crash test warehouse.
