How do I do it and what do I need?

So I have this track on my DAW and lets say I have a RME Fireface and an outboard compressor. How is it that you would run the track back through the Fireface into the compressor and then back into the Fireface and into the DAW? Are you, in essence, re-recording the original track to a separate track or am I way off the mark here in the process? Do I need additional gear? I would apologize for the newbieness of the question, but this is the newbie forum, GOOD DAY SIR *crotch chop*

Your assumption is correct!

If you want that hardware compression sound, you will play back your track. Feed it into your hardware compressor. Take the output of your hardware compressor and feed it into an available line input. Assign it to another "virtual" track in your DAW, without eliminating the original track. You can now mix the compressed track by itself or, if you wish along with the original track. This is a nice option that many engineers utilize as you will have a compressed track and some added greater dynamic range which will invoke more life!

Good thinking!
