Biggie,

when you say panning...do you mean on a console when tracking? The pan function on console's serves as a means of sending that signal through the channel then to the corresponding bus...know what i mean?.....left for odd, right for even.
or it serves as a kinda positon tool during mixdown stage.

Ratio's are used as units of measurements, for example a compressor, the higher the ratio the harder it will comp....umm....if you were to draw a picture of your house at a scale of 1:1 you'd have to draw a picture the same size as your house! 50:1 would be smaller (i think!). Get what i mean?

The best thing you can do is get your hands on a very basic four or eight track and piss fart around with it, turn knobs, play around with faders, see what things do, you cant hurt it. You can read until you grow old but there are some things that books just cant do! Also i recomend you get your hands on a cheap fx unit so you can get familiar with aux send, inserts, etc. Learning to do things the "old school" way has great advantages. It makes it easeier for later on.

Well, keep learning!

i think you have that backwards...with regards to your picture example, a 50:1 drawing would be huge. it would be like expanding everything 50cm for every 1cm, or whatever unit of measurement you decide. likewise, a 1:50 ratio would be very small; 1cm for every 50cm. correct me if i'm wrong!

Erikflipside:

you are correct.

....knew i should have paid more attention in art class!...then again, the only class i enjoyed in high school was music class!.......ahhh....i still hear the cries of my high school music teacher as i begged them to buy at least one synth with lfo's and osc's. hehehe

of course it wasnt within budget.
