As a first audio software package, I have been fiddling around with the Adobe Audition 1.5 (it was originally suggested to me as Cool Edit Pro, but apparently has been bought out by Adobe) demo version (fully functional).
It seems very easy and intuitive and I have been learning a lot from it. However, it also seems somewhat limited in terms of effects, although some of this may be due to my relatively novice status at this.
Any suggestions as to software for a PC-Based system that is as intutive as Audition but which may have broader/greater functions?
I realize this may be a somewhat uniformed question to the more experienced, and appreciate any input you can provide.

I am a big fan of Audition and use it to mix all my work. I will counterpoint here, however.
I do not recommend AA for tracking large projects. The way it handles data for recording projects is awkward and can leave the session vulnerable in the event of software or hardware problem. I do all my tracking with Sony Vegas.
AA gets bogged down by effects more than some other software (Vegas is what I have used for comparison). Using third-party effects only, a recent session played back fine in Vegas - but the identical setup in AA skipped and hesitated on playback. I had to lock some tracks to get smooth playback. Having said that, the main reason I use AA over Vegas for mixing is I get better sounding results from it. I think it is a great sounding packagage, the native effects are more powerful and better sounding, and I prefer it's UI for a mixing environment - especially if you have dual monitors.

Audition is capable of an endless amount of effects, you just have to buy/download plug-ins for it. There's a TON of third party groups who are constantly coming out with new effect plug-ins for it.
